How Long Does Braces Pain Last? And Tips for Relieving Braces Pain
For those considering getting braces or have recently embarked on their journey, one of the most common concerns is the pain that can be experienced during the adjustment process. While it’s true that mild pain and discomfort are a completely normal part of the process, it does not last for the duration of your treatment. As your mouth adjusts to your new braces, your discomfort will lessen over time. In addition, there are several pain management techniques that you can use to help ease the pain and make your orthodontic journey more comfortable.
Why Do Braces Hurt?
Braces put stress on your teeth to move them into alignment for a straighter smile. This pressure can cause mild inflammation and irritation in your mouth which makes your teeth and gums more sensitive. At Frey Orthodontics, we use the latest technology to make your treatment process faster, easier, and more comfortable than ever before.
How Long Do Braces Hurt For?
When you first get braces, it’s common to experience pain and discomfort which lasts between 4-7 days for most individuals. It’s also possible to experience pain and discomfort when your orthodontist makes adjustments or changes such as adding elastics or springs. In such cases, the pain should not last longer than a few days. If at any point during your treatment the pain becomes severe or persists longer than usual, it’s important to contact your orthodontist.
How to Stop Braces Pain
If your braces are bothering you, here are some at-home remedies that can help manage your discomfort:
Eat Recommended Foods
Your orthodontist will provide you with a list of recommended foods for your first week with braces. It is best to start with soft foods like mashed potatoes, soups, and smoothies. Avoid hard, crunchy, and sticky foods that can make the pain worse.
Orthodontic Wax
If your braces are causing pain due to rubbing against the inside of your cheeks or lips, you can use orthodontic wax to create a barrier between the braces and your mouth. Simply roll a small amount of wax into a ball and press it onto the bracket or wire causing the discomfort.
Rinse you Mouth with Salt Water
Stir a teaspoon of salt into a glass of warm water and gargle the mixture around your mouth for about 30 seconds before spitting it out. This salt mixture can help sooth your irritated gums and reduce inflammation. For best results, repeat this 2-3 times per day.
Over-the-counter Pain Relievers
Over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help reduce the pain and discomfort associated with braces. In addition, oral anesthetics such as Anbesol or Orajel can be very beneficial.
